Christmas Memorial Tree 2021

Christmas light in the darkness for much-loved pets

East Kent’s only pet cemetery gave pet lovers the chance to commemorate those furry, feathered, and scaly friends who have been loved and lost at their first Christmas memorial tree light up.

Thanet Animal Cemetery lit up their memorial tree at 4 pm on Thursday, December 16th, at a small and intimate service in December after inviting people to pay tribute to their beloved pet over the Cemetery’s twelve days of Christmas.

“We know how important pets are to their owners, especially over the last couple of years,” said the Animal Cemetery’s Director, Sarah Jarrett, at the service. “So we thought this would be an original way for people to celebrate the lives of their most treasured animals – as well as providing some emotional and physical light in the darkness at Christmas.”

The mementos included decorated baubles, pictures, a beautiful poem, and even some of the pet’s favorite toys – anything that meant something unique to the owner and provided a connection with a pet’s life lost.

The animal cemetery welcomed anyone who wanted to share the moment and reflect,” says Sarah.

The lighting-up event was also live on Facebook, and many people joined in with this beautiful event. You can view their live feed both here and on our Facebook page.

News of the 2022 memorial tree will be shared by The Animal Cemetery later in the year.
